How these flipping figures are calculated
Flipping means buying an item on the Grand Exchange below its going rate and reselling it above what you paid. This page ranks every tradeable item by what that trade is actually worth once tax and buy limits are taken into account.
Margin after tax
The raw margin is the difference between the current instant-sell (buy) price and instant-buy (sell) price. From that, the Grand Exchange sales tax is subtracted: 2% of the sale price, rounded down and capped at 5,000,000 coins per item sold. Rounding down means items under 50 coins are effectively untaxed.
The margin shown is therefore what remains after the tax, not the gap between the two prices. On high-value items the tax is the difference between a profitable flip and a losing one.
Buy limits and volume
Every item has a Grand Exchange buy limit, the maximum quantity one account can buy within a rolling 4-hour window. A 500 gp margin on an item limited to 8 per 4 hours is worth far less per hour than a 20 gp margin on an item limited to 30,000, which is why the limit sits next to the margin in the table.
Traded volume is the second half of that picture: a wide margin on an item that trades a handful of times a day means the offer may simply never fill.

Frequently asked
- How much tax does the Grand Exchange take in OSRS?
- The Grand Exchange charges the seller a 2% sales tax, rounded down and capped at 5,000,000 coins per item sold. Because it rounds down, items selling below 50 coins are effectively untaxed. Buying is not taxed.
- What is a buy limit?
- A buy limit is the maximum quantity of an item a single account can purchase on the Grand Exchange within a rolling 4-hour window. It is set per item and caps how much profit any one flip can produce per hour, regardless of the margin.
- Why is the biggest margin not always the best flip?
- Because hourly profit is the margin multiplied by how many units you can actually buy and sell. A large margin on an item with a low buy limit or thin trading volume produces less per hour than a small margin on a high-volume item, and the offer may take far longer to fill.
- How often do the prices update?
- Every 5 minutes. The prices come from the Old School RuneScape Wiki real-time prices API, which aggregates trades players report from the Grand Exchange.
