How High Alchemy profit is calculated
High Level Alchemy converts an item into coins at a fixed value set by the game. It is profitable when that fixed value exceeds what the item costs on the Grand Exchange plus the nature rune the spell consumes.
The calculation
Profit per cast is the item's High Alchemy value minus its current Grand Exchange buy price minus the live price of one nature rune. The nature rune price is read from the Grand Exchange like any other item, so the profit figures move with the rune market and not against a fixed assumption.
No Grand Exchange sales tax is subtracted here, because the item is destroyed by the spell rather than sold on the Grand Exchange. The only tax that applies to alching is the one you pay on buying the item, which is none.
What the numbers do not include
The fire runes (or a fire staff) the spell also needs are not part of the profit figure, and neither is the value of the Magic experience each cast grants. The buy limit on the item still applies: it caps how many casts an hour of alching can actually sustain.
Frequently asked
- How do you calculate High Alchemy profit in OSRS?
- Subtract the item's Grand Exchange price and the current price of one nature rune from the item's High Alchemy value. If the result is positive, the item is profitable to alch.
- Does the Grand Exchange tax apply to High Alchemy?
- No. The 2% Grand Exchange sales tax applies only when you sell an item on the Grand Exchange. High Alchemy destroys the item and pays a fixed amount of coins, so no sales tax is charged.
- What do I need to cast High Level Alchemy?
- Level 55 Magic, one nature rune, and five fire runes per cast (a fire staff or tome supplies the fire runes). Each cast grants 65 Magic experience.
- Why does an item show a loss?
- Because its Grand Exchange price plus the nature rune costs more than the item's fixed High Alchemy value. Most items are in that state; the ones worth alching are a small minority, which is what this page filters for.
